Planets in a chart do not act alone. They form angles with one another called aspects, and these relationships often explain more about personality and events than placements by themselves.
The major Western aspects
| Aspect | Angle | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Fusion; planets blend and intensify |
| Sextile | 60° | Opportunity; easy cooperation with effort |
| Square | 90° | Tension; friction that drives action |
| Trine | 120° | Harmony; natural talent and flow |
| Opposition | 180° | Polarity; awareness through others |
Orbs
Aspects need not be exact. The allowed margin is called the orb; many astrologers use up to 8° for major aspects (wider for the Sun and Moon). The tighter the orb, the stronger the aspect feels.
"Hard" doesn't mean bad
Squares and oppositions are called hard aspects because they create friction, but friction produces motivation. Many successful people have strong squares in their charts. Trines, while pleasant, can make talents so easy that they go undeveloped. A balanced chart contains both.
Examples
- Moon trine Venus: emotional warmth, charm and ease in relationships.
- Mars square Saturn: frustration with obstacles, but enormous endurance once mastered.
- Sun conjunct Mercury: identity closely tied to thinking and communication.
- Venus opposite Jupiter: generosity and enjoyment, with a need for moderation.
Drishti in Vedic astrology
Vedic astrology uses a different method called drishti (sight), counted by house rather than exact degree. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. In addition, Mars aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th, and Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. Rahu and Ketu are often given Jupiter-like 5th and 9th aspects. Jupiter's aspect is considered protective wherever it falls, while Saturn's brings discipline and delay.
How to read aspects
Combine the two planets' meanings and colour them with the aspect's nature. Ask: which planets are involved, which houses do they rule and occupy, and is the contact easy or challenging? With practice, aspects become the "plot" that connects the characters in your chart.
