In Vedic astrology, a yoga is a specific combination of planets, signs and houses that produces a particular result. Classical texts describe hundreds of them. Here are the most famous — and how to read them realistically.

Raja Yoga

A Raja Yoga ("royal combination") forms when the lord of a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) connects with the lord of a trikona (houses 1, 5, 9) through conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. It is associated with status, authority and success. A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona — such as Saturn for Taurus and Libra ascendants — is called a yogakaraka.

Gaja Kesari Yoga

Formed when Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon. Its name means "elephant and lion," symbolising strength and dignity. It is linked with wisdom, reputation and the ability to overcome obstacles.

Budha-Aditya Yoga

The conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, associated with intelligence and communication skills. Because Mercury is never far from the Sun, it is very common; its strength depends on Mercury not being too close (combust) and on the house involved.

Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas

Five "great person" yogas form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the ascendant:

  • Ruchaka (Mars): courage, leadership.
  • Bhadra (Mercury): intellect, eloquence.
  • Hamsa (Jupiter): wisdom, virtue.
  • Malavya (Venus): beauty, comfort, artistry.
  • Shasha (Saturn): discipline, organisation, influence.

Dhana Yogas

Combinations among the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses that indicate wealth potential.

Viparita Raja Yoga

When lords of the challenging houses (6, 8, 12) are placed in other challenging houses, difficulties can unexpectedly turn into gains — success born of adversity.

Reading yogas realistically

Many people have several yogas; their results depend on the strength of the planets involved, whether they are afflicted, and whether their dashas operate during your lifetime. A yoga is a potential, not a guarantee. Effort and circumstances still shape how — and whether — it manifests.
