If your birth chart shows an "R" or "℞" beside a planet, that planet was retrograde when you were born — appearing to move backward from Earth's point of view. Natal retrogrades are very common: most people have at least one.

The general meaning

A retrograde planet's energy tends to be turned inward. Its themes may develop later, more privately or in an unconventional way. People often revisit and rework these areas throughout life, eventually gaining deep mastery.

The Vedic view

In Jyotish, a retrograde planet (vakri graha) is closer to Earth and appears brighter, so it is considered strong — though its results can be unusual or delayed. Some astrologers interpret retrograde planets as karma carried over from past lives that needs completion.

Planet by planet

  • Mercury retrograde: reflective thinker; may think before speaking, excellent at research and editing.
  • Venus retrograde: unique tastes in love and beauty; may reassess values and relationships over time.
  • Mars retrograde: energy directed inward; strategic rather than impulsive; may need to learn healthy assertion.
  • Jupiter retrograde: personal philosophy developed independently; wisdom that comes from inner questioning.
  • Saturn retrograde: a strong inner sense of duty; may set high standards for oneself.
  • Outer planets: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are retrograde nearly half the year, so their retrograde status is more generational.

The Sun and Moon are never retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are almost always retrograde in their mean motion.

When retrogrades turn direct

Through secondary progressions, a natal retrograde planet may station direct during your lifetime. Astrologers often note that the planet's themes become more outwardly expressed around that age.

Making peace with a retrograde

A retrograde planet invites patience. Its rewards come from reflection, practice and returning to the same subject repeatedly. Many writers, researchers and specialists have prominent retrogrades — their depth comes precisely from that inward turn.
